Backpackers
Backpackers – Day
31 – March 7th
Little seems to have changed in the world of hostels, rucksacks and cold mango smoothies. Jo and Taran and I spent the afternoon
propping up the bar at Le Pomme on street 2.5 in Battambang watching the
travellers come and go. I had a tuna
salad ($3.50) Jo, fried rice ($3.25). It
could have been 40 years ago. With
inflation allowed for.
I was going to say something interesting about the way $1
changes its meaning once you are on the road with an eye on longevity and
everything is a transaction.
Tuk tuk back to the hotel $1.
But then I got too hot to write for the day – even though we went on the old Bamboo Train and Taran beat me at Pool. Which would usually be OK but this time I didn’t let him win. Just left my charge on the eight ball too late.

Taran seems to thrive on the backpack circuit and makes
friends easily.
I bet Taran doesn’t feel the heat as badly as you do.
ReplyDeleteIsn’t it amazing how the heat changes your priorities. A lot of things just stop being important! Anything that involves any kind of rush just doesn’t work.
Living in the heat for a long time will be interesting. Will you adapt? Will you change?
